We’re delighted to be supporting Road Safety Week, an awareness week organised by Brake, the road safety charity. This year, the campaign is running from 19th to 25th November and the theme is ‘Bike Smart’.

The campaign will focus on the safety of cyclists and motorcyclists and encouraging all road users to be Bike Smart. More than a third of people killed or seriously injured on UK roads are those travelling by bike or motorcycle.

Brake is a national road safety charity that exists to stop the needless deaths and injuries caused on roads. This Bike Smart campaign will focus on:

  • Policy-makers being Bike Smart by implementing a safe systems approach, mandating lifesaving technology and prioritising cycle-friendly infrastructure.
  • Drivers being Bike Smart by looking out for those on two wheels, driving safely and slowly and giving bike riders plenty of space.
  • Cyclists and motorcyclists being Bike Smart through safe riding behaviours and appropriate training and equipment.

The vast majority of road accidents are preventable, and cyclists and motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road user, with more than 100 UK riders injured every day in preventable crashes.

With more and more members of the public opting for cycling as a way of transport, too, there is an ever-growing need to protect this number with safe systems.

By creating a safe journey for cyclists, it encourages a healthy and environmentally-friendly form of travel that is currently ignored by millions of Brits. Road Safety Week highlights what drivers can do to make built-up areas safer for pedestrians.
